The Story Behind LizArtworks: From Uganda to Finland
Every creative journey begins with a story. For LizArtworks, that story began in 2005 in Uganda, where a passion for textiles, craftsmanship, beading/jewellery making and cultural expression first took shape.
Every creative journey begins with a story. For LizArtworks, that story began in 2005 in Uganda, where a passion for textiles, craftsmanship, beading/jewellery making and cultural expression first took shape.
LizArtworks started as a small creative initiative rooted in handmade work, African textiles, beadwork, and artistic exploration. The goal was simple but meaningful: to celebrate the beauty of traditional fabrics and beads while finding new ways to express identity through design.
Textiles in many African cultures are more than materials. They carry stories, heritage, and community memory. Fabrics such as kikoyi, leso, Masai sukka, Toghu, Ashooke, Kitenge, Kanga, Kuba cloth, kente, Adire, Mudcloth (Bògòlanfini), Bazin, Barkcloth, Kanga (Khanga), Shweshwe, and African prints have long been part of everyday life, worn, shared, and passed down across generations. LizArtworks grew from this understanding that cloth can be both functional and deeply symbolic.
Years later, the journey expanded beyond Africa.
In 2022, LizArtworks began a new chapter in the Nordic region with its launch in Åland. This step opened new possibilities for cultural exchange and creative collaboration. The meeting between African textile traditions and Nordic design sensibilities became an important inspiration.
By 2024, LizArtworks Finland OY was officially established in Turku, Finland, marking the next stage of growth for the brand.
Today, LizArtworks operates as a creative platform that brings together several areas of work:
• Sustainable fashion and textile design
• Handmade accessories and cultural products
• Textile printing and creative production
• Cultural projects, exhibitions, and workshops
At the heart of LizArtworks is a belief that creativity can connect people across cultures and borders. Through design, storytelling, and collaboration, textiles become a way to explore identity, heritage, and sustainability.
Projects such as Threads of Identity and Threads Without Borders reflect this vision — using wearable art and textile experimentation to explore migration, belonging, and cultural dialogue.
Looking forward, LizArtworks continues to grow as a bridge between African heritage and Nordic creativity, celebrating the idea that fabrics, ideas, and stories can travel far beyond the places where they began.
Because sometimes, a single thread can connect the world.
